I am J. Houston Bales. For six years, I fought for those who had nobody else to fight for them at the
Sedgwick County Public Defender in Wichita, Kansas, where I became one of the leading trial
attorneys in the Wichita area. In July of 2025, I started a new chapter in my practice, bringing the same
excellent advocacy I have brought to Sedgwick County to the entire state of Kansas.
I was raised in Wichita, Kansas and attended Wichita State University, earning a degree in secondary
education before moving on to the University of Texas at San Antonio for a Master’s degree in English
and the University of Kansas School of Law, earning a J.D. and the Advocacy Certificate. In 2018, I
was admitted to the state and Federal bars of Kansas.
In my career, I have been honored with the KBA Pro Bono Commitment Award and the KACDL Legal
Educator Award. I have given testimony before the Kansas Legislature, taught continuing legal
education events, and competed for the Kansas State Fiddling Championship.
I want to bring this expertise, creativity, and passion to your case. Send me an email, shoot me a text
message, or call me if you want to talk to me about what I can do to help you in your time of trouble.
